Learning with Hands-On Activities

For years educators have stressed that students learn better "by doing" - especially in the sciences. Students of all ages learn more science-content and skills when they engage in investigation and discovery using everyday materials and the basic equipment of science.

Chemistry ExperimentHow can this learning take place? Our carefully designed inquiry centered lessons that involve children with hands-on activies which capture children's natural curiosity, stimulate their interest in science and teach them important science topics along with critical thinking skills.

Our unique Science Club program is designed to meet the needs of children in grades K-6. Club Scientific lessons help engage students in observation, measurement, identification of properties, and experimentation involving life, earth and physical science concepts. The units are rigorously researched by science educators with the help of teachers and children. The results are lessons that students can enjoy and genuinely learn from. Science was never this much fun!

Two GirlsClub Scientific Science Club provides dozens of science topics including: Rocketry, Chemistry, Paleontology, Forensics, Weather, Flight, Technology and many other disciplines of science. All Club Scientific lessons are designed to help with the development of the following scientific process skills: observing, classifying, comparing, measuring, critical thinking, predicting, hypothesizing, sequencing and experimentation.

Club Scientific believes in parental involvement. In every Club Scientific class, your child will receive a lesson card describing the lesson with some suggestions for extending the learning experience at home. After each five week session, students will receive a science medal to recognize their Scientific achievements.

Each science enrichment UNIT lasts for five weeks. Classes meet once a week for approximately 45-50 minutes. Class size is 8-10 students, per instructor, with the cost of $70.00 per student per Unit.

2008-2009 Course Offerings

Go Car Go:
Did you know that getting race car drivers around the track each week is all science? We will explore the Laws of Motion by simulating car crashes, learning about aerodynamics, and studying "track conditions." Experiments include determining how fast students actually travel as compared to a race car. In addition, we'll do some aerodynamic testing using our own wind tunnel. We will finish the session by building our own toy race car. Let's go racing!

Water, Water Everywhere:
Water is everywhere and all life on Earth depends on it. Students will learn how important clean water is to humans by learning the water cycle and participating in a water taste test. Exploring several types of water habitats, we will learn about the creatures that live there. Do you know the difference between frogs and toads? How does a fish swim through a strong current? Where do Loggerhead Turtles live? Let's find out!

Sounds of Music:
Join us as we pound out some tunes using science. We will make our own ukuleles while discovering sound waves. We'll create a band using palm pipes and hear how air vibrations create music. Using drum rhythms, we'll learn that sound has speed. Come, join the band!

Boy with PlaneHocus Pocus Science:
Calling all would-be magicians! Follow in the foot steps of Harry Houdini as we discover how magic tricks really are science. Learn to make water disappear. See how a paper clip can float in mid-air. Uncover the mystery of the Magic Hand. Be prepared to dazzle your family and friends with magic.

Machine Madness:
As you pass by a construction zone did you ever wonder how those big machines work? We are going to find out! Experiments include working with pulleys, discovering the wheel, and playing with levers. We'll finish the session by putting all this knowledge to work when each student builds their own catapult!

Creepy Crawlies:
Let's go on a bug hunt! Students learn about the fascinating, and sometimes creepy world of insects. The session begins with creating our own bug hunting kit while learning some bug lingo. As the session continues, several bugs are featured as we explore their world. We will observe a real praying mantis egg sac and watch as the "baby bugs" emerge. Creating our own ant farms, we will see how complex an ant's world really is.
