Americans have always been proud of our strength in science and technology. We lead the world in almost all fields of science and technology. We are first in the world in almost all fields of fundamental research and technical innovation, from cosmology to nanotechnology. The question is whether we maintain this lead.
The reasons for concern stems from declining government support for research and development to a decrease in qualified science and math teachers in our classrooms. Signs of deficiencies abound. U.S. students may be holding their own in math and science at the elementery level, but international comparisons indicate they are falling behind most of their global peers as they progress through the system.
